Ryan Gosling drops out of Logan’s Run
Ryan Gosling and Nicholas Winding Refn have begun to form the kind of actor-director relationship that brings out the best in both parties, but sadly, that relationship will not continue on the latter’s forthcoming remake of Logan’s Run…

I don’t know that we need a Logan’s Run remake but Gosling’s involvement always had me interested. Now, less.

1.  This is just Eastwood’s third acting job in the last ten years (and the first time since 1993’s In The Line of Fire he acted in a movie he didn’t direct) and all three of those movies seem to follow a pretty similar theme, at least in terms of his characters.  Both Curve and Million Dollar Baby (2004) seem to be about an old man accepting a woman’s presence in a traditionally man’s world.  In this film, Amy Adams actually plays his daughter where previously Hilary Swank played what amounted to a stand-in for that Eastwood character’s daughter.  In between those two movies is Gran Torino (2008), in which grumpy old Clint (who really plays it up on screen but seems decidedly un-grumpy in most interview I’ve seen; sort of the anti-Harrison Ford) has to set his racism aside and let his Asian neighbors into his grizzled heart.  It feels like a strong through line and Clint has made it easy to trace given the scarcity of roles over the decade.  It’s neat to see what gets this guy up and ready to go.

2.  Aren’t baseball movies supposed to be father/son movies?  Making this a father/daughter movie seems like a great choice, even if I’m not all that excited for what looks like something we’ve seen before with the Amy Adams character.  It’s too bad because Adams is a great talent and I like the conceit but doesn’t feel like we’ve been watching the “woman in a man’s world” character for a while now?  At what point is this no longer going to be an issue?  I’m not suggesting that it is no longer an issue (sexism is still prevalent, if more covert now) I’m generally asking:  When is this no longer going to be an issue?  While it’s still fun to get a look inside what Clint is interested in portraying, I’m tired of waiting for other old dudes to catch up to what he and Ron Burgundy have known for a long time:  ladies can do stuff now.  So this has spiraled from a critique of a trailer to a cultural complaint.  The movie looks decent but I have a much stronger craving for this type of story not needing to be told anymore.

3.  I like Justin Timberlake as an actor a hell of a lot more than I ever liked any of his music.  He can keep doing this, even if the part looks like it might be a relatively unchallenging one.

4.  Matthew Lillard is in another thing!  He directed Fat Kid Rules The World, which I’d still like to see, and popped up in The Descendants last year so hopefully we’ll be seeing more of him.  Think back:  Has Lillard ever done anything less than elevate material he’s been given any time you’ve seen him?  No idea how big his part is in this, hopefully pretty big.

5.  The bit of the trailer with Lillard in it does seem pretty anti-Moneyball doesn’t it?  As though these movies are a new channel through which baseball nerds can argue over which approach to building a baseball team is better.

Josh Trank to direct Spider-Man spin-off?
Venom, the long-awaited Spider-Man spin-off, looks to be moving forward with Sony apparently tapping up Chronicle’s Josh Trank to occupy the director’s chair…

The 90’s saw a spate of Venom comics that never quite amounted to anything more than entertaining reads for people already interested in Spider-man or Venom in particular.  As one of those people who really like the McFarlene Venom from the late 80’s-ealry 90’s I’d love to see a similarly toned Venom movie but I don’t know how it could reach an audience of people not just like me.  And I don’t think that’s many people.

Bill Murray shreds Ghostbusters 3 script
Anyone hoping to see the old Ghostbusters lineup reunited for Dan Aykroyd’s tortured sequel might be waiting a long time, as Bill Murray appears to have ruled out a return once and for all.

According to The National Enquirer, Murray had been sent the latest version of a script for Ghostbusters 3, co-written by original stars Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. However, his reaction wasn’t exactly favourable…

I don’t know if I believe it.  Maybe I just don’t want to.

Given that this movie seems to be starring Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher, it pains me to be this cynical.  It also seems to be pretty low budget - according to the linked article, $3mil which is dirt cheap for a Hollywood movie today - which just makes it more attractive to me because the worst thing for comedy is to throw money at it.  The worst.

All in all I should be looking forward to this, except we literally just got done talking about this premise.  This exact premise.

Scarlett Johansson talks her directorial debut
Scarlett Johansson has got a big year ahead. Not only will the 27-year-old be appearing in a trio of big releases – Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo, Jonathan Glazer’s sci-fi Under The Skin and something called The Avengers – but she’ll also be stepping behind the camera for the first time on Summer Crossing.

The film is an adaptation of Truman Capote’s first novel of the same name, set in New York in 1945. The story follows Grady, a 17-year-old Protestant from a wealthy family, as she enters a passionate (and somewhat controversial) affair with a Jewish parking attendant….

My love for Scarlett Johansson is unconditional.  I’ll watch all of these.

Robert De Niro gets delusional in the Being Flynn trailer
A first official trailer has arrived for Paul Weitz’s Being Flynn, an adaptation of playwright Nick Flynn’s memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City. The film stars Paul Dano as an aspiring young writer, who takes on a job at a local homeless shelter. Whilst there he meets a bedraggled old gentleman, who just happens to be his estranged father (Robert De Niro), an acclaimed writer himself, if only in his own head.[TO SEE THE TRAILER, CLICK ON THE POSTER OR FOLLOW THIS LINK]

Watching the trailer, it looks like I can take or leave the movie.  The thing that continues to bother me, though, is Hollwood’s love of changing a good title to a shitty one during the adaptation process.

Looks like a solid step in what has been the painfully slow process of legitimizing Ryan Reynolds as a capable action lead.  Sharing time with Denzel will help build foundation.
